From Entry-Level Sales to IT Leadership: Bethany DeAngelo Builds Relationships and a Career

Bethany DeAngelo's journey at WWEX Group began out of college in an entry-level sales role but evolved unexpectedly into a leadership role in technology. With a knack for enhancing customer experiences and fostering teamwork, fourteen years of fun later, she’s now the VP of IT and heads WWEX's Product Group. Bethany thrives in the company's "work hard, play hard" culture, cherishing the familial atmosphere and supportive leadership. Her job's highlight? Building relationships—with clients and colleagues alike. Passionate about logistics, she finds constant fulfillment in problem-solving.

Bethany’s journey with the WWEX Group began in 2010 as a sales representative for Worldwide Express, one of the brands under WWEX Group. Having majored in marketing in college, Bethany was looking for a short-term job to develop her sales and marketing acumen. She never dreamed just how far her first role with the company would take her. “I started with WWEX Group to get some sales experience,” Bethany recalls. “I had so much fun I decided to never leave!”

After impressing executive leadership with her adaptability, personality and work ethic, Bethany was offered a new position on the technology side of the business. “I had very little tech experience,” she says. “But I loved the organization and the people.” Bethany soon discovered a passion for enhancing the customer experience and building effective, cross-functional teams and her career grew with the company.

Today, Bethany is the head of WWEX’s Product Group and works with our customers and internal development teams to understand and implement the functionality our systems need to provide the best possible experience.

When asked what attracted her to the WWEX Group and what’s kept her there all these years, Bethany doesn’t hesitate: “It’s the culture. I could tell from the get-go it was a ‘work hard, play hard’ type of place, and it’s still that way today. I loved the idea that at the WWEX Group, you get to decide how well you do and how far you go. You’re in control of your own destiny.”

Bethany says the WWEX Group is a family, across every level and all the way up through the top leadership ranks. “It feels like everyone is willing to work together to move the business forward. We all have each other’s back,” she shares. “Our exec team is the best there is — they always put people first and are as hands-on as they can be day-to-day. The way our leaders operate breeds the company culture from the top down, and I feel like we all share that vision.”

As for Bethany’s favorite part of her job? “Easy. It’s the relationships I get to build, both with our customers and my team members. I’m actually an introvert even though I come across as very outgoing, and I’m very relationship-oriented,” she shares. “It’s very challenging but very rewarding to solve problems and build connections with people.”

After nearly 15 years in the WWEX Group, Bethany still loves the logistics industry. “Regardless of the what the world is doing, people always need shipping,” she says. “Through economic ups and downs, it never goes away. There are always problems to solve and people to help!

As much as Bethany loves her customers and team members, the feeling is mutual. “One particularly busy time, someone on my team called me a ‘majestic monster’ as a joking compliment,” she laughs. “Not long after, the team got me a half-mermaid, half-unicorn stuffed animal for my office shelf. As you can guess, I get a lot of fun questions about that!

When she’s not busy leading her WWEX Group team and delivering the best for our customers, “Majestic Monster” Bethany loves to read, cook and spend time with her friends and family.

From Quebec City Roots to AI Leadership: Jonathan Drouin Helps Shape the Future of Logistics

Jonathan Drouin’s journey into logistics began by accident. While finishing his college degree at night, a chance stop at a job fair led him into freight sales. Today, the Canadian-born technologist blends his background in software development with more than a decade in logistics to lead WWEX Group’s AI program as Vice President of Product Strategy and Design. Guided by Wayne Gretzky’s philosophy of “skating to where the puck is going,” Jonathan is a true leader in WWEX Group’s innovative, people-first culture.

For Jonathan Drouin, technology has always been part of the family conversation. Growing up near Quebec City, his father owned a tech company and often pitched forward-looking ideas at the dinner table. "I remember him telling me that one day restaurants would have little screens where you could order your meal and pay without ever waiting for a server," Jonathan recalls. "At the time, it seemed like science fiction. Now you see it at Chili's. That kind of creativity shaped the way I think about technology."

Today, Jonathan serves as Vice President of Product Strategy and Design at WWEX Group, where he leads the charge in building and scaling the company's AI roadmap. His team is responsible for setting the technology vision, working closely with both company leaders and developers to ensure WWEX Group is not just keeping pace with innovation, but staying several steps ahead.
He joined Worldwide Express, now part of WWEX Group, in 2019 as Vice President of Truckload Product — proof that you can grow and expand your career across the different WWEX Group family of brands. At the time, he was brought on to help develop a new truckload focused transportation management system (TMS), an opportunity he describes as "a life-changing experience."

"It's not every day you get the chance to help build a platform in the logistics space," Jonathan says. "Being part of that process at a company like Worldwide Express — and now shaping how we innovate across all WWEX Group brands — has been extraordinarily exciting."

As a proud Canadian, Jonathan often cites hockey legend Wayne Gretzky's famous quote about "skating to where the puck is going," and how he implements that philosophy into product strategy. "It's not about where we are today, but where the company and our technology need to be in two or three years — and building a plan to get us there."

Surprisingly, Jonathan's path into logistics was far from planned. After starting as a software developer, he decided to pursue sales to pay for university courses at night. By chance, he walked up to a freight brokerage booth at a college job fair — and that serendipity set the stage for a career in logistics. "I swore I wouldn't stay in the industry," he laughs. "But it hooked me. Logistics is dynamic, fast-moving and full of energy. It's like controlled chaos — and if you thrive on problem-solving and a fast-paced environment, it's addictive."

What keeps Jonathan at WWEX Group is more than the industry's pace. It's the culture. "From the start, it felt different here," he explains. "The leadership embraces change, the people are collaborative, and we're given the opportunity to work on extraordinary things — like embedding AI into real shipping operations. That's rare. And it's exciting."

Jonathan also brings a clear philosophy to his leadership style: "Action beats inaction." He encourages his team to move forward decisively, even when outcomes aren't certain. "If you're unsure, make a move," he explains. "We'll learn faster by doing than by standing still. That mindset has helped us drive innovation and stay ahead in such a fast-changing industry."
Outside of work, Jonathan's time is dedicated to his family and a new passion he picked up after moving to Texas: barbecue. "As a Canadian, I didn't even grow up grilling," he admits. "Now I'm obsessed with Texas BBQ. I haven't mastered brisket yet, but I love experimenting with ribs and steaks. If family is in town, we're either at a BBQ spot or in the backyard smoking something. It's become my way to relax and recharge."

For Jonathan, the throughline from childhood to today is clear: technology, people and possibility. At WWEX Group, he's found the perfect place to bring all three together.

Mike Lyles has thrived in his journey at WWEX Group, evolving from an entry-level franchise operations role in 2009 to become Director of Franchise Acquisitions today. His role encompasses everything franchise-related, focusing on support and performance optimization for franchisees. Despite health challenges as a two-time cancer survivor, Mike's resilience and dedication shine through, driven by a passion to make a positive impact on others. His journey reflects a deep commitment to service and connection, transforming his role into more than logistics management.

For Mike Lyles, the best word to summarize his journey in life and with WWEX Group is “evolution.” As Director of Franchise Acquisition, Mike is involved in all things franchise-facing, including account management, onboarding, revenue operations and more. “In a nutshell, it’s my role and my team’s role to ensure that our franchisees know how valued they are and that they have the support to perform at the highest level,” he says.

Mike’s journey at the WWEX Group began back in 2009 with an entry-level franchise freight operations job. As a two-time cancer survivor, he wanted to start over and make a change. “I thought my job at WWEX Group was going to be a temporary, short-term thing,” he remembers. “I never saw myself in management or as a leader. WWEX Group took me under its wing, taught me the business and how to be someone people could lean on. I was told that I could really do this if I wanted it.”

On deciding to stay with the WWEX Group and evolve his career, despite continuing health challenges, Mike said: “I have the mindset that everything happens for a reason. You’ve got to slow down and realize what you’re blessed with and what really matters. A lot of people have it much worse than me. I don’t know if I wouldn’t have been able to make it this far without the support of my coworkers. ‘Keep moving on’ is my mindset so that I can have a positive impact on others.”

Mike’s desire to help others while standing out stems from his childhood, when he was the fourth out of six kids. “I was the runt of the family growing up and got lost a bit in that big group,” he recalls. “I wasn’t a big athlete — I was the underdog, the scrappy one. I’ve learned to apply that mentality to my life and work and turn it into an advantage.”

When it comes to his role, Mike sees it as having evolved into something far beyond an important position at a logistics company: “When you pull back the curtain, it’s not about boxes and packages. It’s all about connection and communication. You want to do everything you can to take care of the people behind the packages. It’s all about the service aspect of it.”

In his time with WWEX Group, Mike has come to see the company as a truly unique place to work. “Most people I work with I see as good friends, if not family,” he shares. “When you think of the corporate world, it’s usually a very rigid place where you never have the opportunity to have open conversations or share your ideas. Here, you can speak up and out on items that could be improved to help the company and our customers. There’s a true open-door policy at WWEX Group.”

As his role at WWEX Group continues to grow and evolve, Mike doesn’t forget to take the time for his personal passions and dreams. “I’m really into weightlifting — it’s my stress release,” he shares. “I also love to smoke briskets and pork shoulders. I’m even thinking about getting a food truck as a side hustle!”

David Nelson Builds Teams, Culture and a Career at WWEX Group

David Nelson's career spanned diverse roles from train conductor to butcher to sales before finding his niche in logistics. David started in an entry-level operations role at a local WWEX Group Worldwide Express franchise. Ten years later, he has moved to Monterrey, Mexico, spearheading the opening of a new office as the Senior Director of Operations, juggling responsibilities from team building to customer service. David's dedication to nurturing talent and fostering a people-first culture shines through as does his approach to blending professional growth with personal connections.

Throughout his career, David Nelson has always worn a lot of hats and his role as Senior Director of Operations with WWEX Group is no exception. Currently in the process of opening a brand new office in Mexico, his job includes building a local leadership team, liaising between departments, track and trace, business services, customer service and more.

Before joining WWEX Group in 2014, David had been a train conductor, a butcher and had held a series of sales jobs. After relocating from Minneapolis to Atlanta, he was discovered on LinkedIn by a local Worldwide Express franchise, part of WWEX Group, and soon worked his way up to overseeing operations there. After the franchise was brought into the corporate office, David ended up overseeing Worldwide Express operations on the entire east coast.

When asked why he decided to stay and grow with WWEX Group, David said, “It’s the reward I feel for getting people on my team where they can go. Being able to see someone’s face when you light a path for them, and the people I’ve brought up with me through the ranks over the years. It’s priceless to help people find their way and realize their potential.”

An example of the people-first culture at WWEX Group came early in David’s career. “It was my first Christmas in Georgia and my entire family was still up in Minnesota,” he recounts. “My boss heard I wasn’t going home for Thanksgiving and invited me over for his own family’s celebration! It showed how the people at WWEX Group are there for me on a personal level as well as a professional one.”

Diving deeper into the special WWEX Group culture, he says: “It’s the ‘build your own culture’ aspect that I love. It’s knowing that everybody has a voice and we’re encouraged to speak out and listen to everyone. There’s a lot of great ideas brewing, and regardless of our title or role, we have a voice.”

Having that voice in the company has enabled David to feel valued and welcome and do the same for his team members. “You have such a support system around you here,” he says. “I use this job to challenge me and open me up as a person, which is not anything I could have gotten anywhere else. It’s peeled the layers off of who I am and really enabled me to be myself.”

Positive self-expression and team building are the name of the game for David, who makes sure his team’s space includes unique morale-boosting features such as a putting green, cold brew coffee keg and giant Jenga set. Outside of work, David ensures he regularly makes time to go hiking with his dog and lay out by the pool.
